The Norwegian Zoological Society (NZF) is currently organizing a national distribution-mapping project on mammals in Norway. The project was started in 1993, but data dating back to 1980 is included. The last year of data collection is 2004 (but mapping following the same scheme continues from 2005 on, especially for rare and threatened species). All species of wild mammals are included in the project (also marine species). The mapping area includes the Norwegian mainland (with associated islands along the coast), Svalbard (with Bjørnøya), Jan Mayen, and the marine areas in the Norwegian economical zone around these terrestrial areas. The basic mapping units are 10x10 km squares as defined by the UTM system. If available, more detailed geographical information is collected, especially for the smaller less mobile species.

Preliminary distribution maps for the Norwegian mainland with adjacent waters and Svalbard with adjacent waters are presented on these pages to present the status of the work (as of February 2002) for potential contributors. (The maps have been produced with the use of the DMAP Distribution mapping software).

Individuals and institutions possessing data on mammal distribution in Norway are urged to contribute to the project. All records are welcome, including single observations of the more common species. It is important that all records are followed by coordinates or by detailed descriptions of where the records were made. Date, number of animals and a short description of each record (animal observed alive, found dead etc.) should also be supplied. Please use the address below for queries and data submissions (you can also contact members of the project committee directly).

NZF was the national coordinator for Norway in the European Atlas project on mammals (EMMA), organized by Societas Europaea Mammalogica. The results from this project were published in 1999 and all data collected during our national project up to 1997 is included in the final EMMA publication (although at a coarser 50x50 km resolution).

A list of references of progress reports and other publications from the project can be found here. The final publication from the EMMA-project, as well as other publications where data from the national mapping project have been used, are also listed.
